Chongqing’s gross rural economic value (i.e. GDP of areas at county level and below) in 2002 reached 73 billion yuan RMB, while its total agricultural output value amounted to 26.4 billion yuan RMB. Its 101,000 enterprises in the townships and villages realized an added value of 32.57 billion yuan and absorbed 1.62 million surplus farming lablors.     

Readjustment of agricultural structure. The high-quality rate of oil plants and vegetable products reached 45.1% and 32.5% respectively. The proportion of rural secondary industry and tertiary industry has greatly increased to 56.8% in 2002 from 43% in 1997 ( the year when chongqing became a municipality directly under the central government). Meanwhile. The ratio of first industry reduced from 57%to 43.2% in 2002. In the same year, the rate of farming labors against rural labors declined to 63.5% from 74.5% in 1996.
