Located in southwest China, Chongqing is a unique municipality directly under the central government with the features of big city, large countryside, big reservoir and big mountains.

The total area of the municipality covers 82,400 square kilometers and governs 40 counties and districts, 891 towns, 9053 villages. The total population is 32.35 million, including 23 million farmers.

By the end of 2008, the area under cultivation is 2.236 million ha. The area of paddy field is 1.10 million ha. The rural people’s average per capita amount of arable land is 0.09 ha. The forest acreage is 20.49%.

Chongqing is part of the humid sub-tropical monsoon climate belt. The annual average temperature is about 18℃ with the year's total duration of bright sunshine of 1,000-1,200 hours. It also has the features of being warm in winter and hot in summer, long frost-free period, plenty of rainfall, high humidity and short hours of bright sunshine, rainy and hot together in summer. Chongqing receives rainfall, averaging about 1,100 to 1,400 millimeters. The elevations in Chongqing differ enormously with obvious stereoscopic climate. The crops in this district can grow well in the year around.

Chongqing has abundant animal and plant resources with more than 6,000 animals and plants, among them 560 belongs to commercial cultivars, rice is the most important crops there. Citrus production in Chongqing is well known in the world, and Chongqing is regarded as ‘Capital of Citrus’.Chongqing is also rich in medicinal plant resources and one of the most important Chinese herb production areas. Shizhu county got its name of ‘Capital of Coptis chinensis’ in China, Fuling district as ‘Capital of Pickle’ in China. Rongchang pig tops the three Chinese pigs and is called as ‘National Treasure of Huaxia’.

Directly under the jurisdiction of Central Government for 10 years, agriculture and the rural economy in Chongqing have developed fairly fast. In 2008, the rural economic aggregate reached to 162.7 billion yuan(RMB, the same hereinafter), and had increased by more than two times over the figures in 1996. The value added of the agriculture was 57.54 billion, 100% of growth; the value added of the township enterprise was 134.9 billion, 11 times increased and the average net income of the farmer was ￥4,126 yuan, 1.8 times increased.

In 2008, the total seeding area of crops was 3.2151 million hectares. Among them, the seeding area of grains was 2.2154 million hectares and the full production capacity of grains was 11,532 kilotons and the average occupancy was 354 kilograms per person. The seeding area of oil crops was 215,500 hectares and the full production capacity was 356.8 kilotons. The seeding area of vegetables was 481,600 hectares and the full production capacity was 9945,200 kilotons. The citrus planting area was 140,000 hectares and the total output was 1,450 kilotons. The output of the fresh eggs was 343 kilotons and the milk was 89 kilotons, while the pigs for slaughter were 18,970 chin-head and the output of meat was 1,720 kilotons. The yearly total output value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery reached ￥87.14 billion yuan. Among it, agriculture was 46.55 billion, forestry was 2.93 billion, animal husbandry was 24.41 billion and the fishery, 2.11 billion.

In the coming future, our municipal government will enlarge the work force to advance agricultural, urban and rural development and promoting new countryside, to vigorously develop food, citrus, vegetables, flowers, pig industry, make sure that the main agricultural products supply, increases the income of farmers. To the end of 2012, we must work hard for the rural economy for 12% of the total amount of average annual growth, food production stabilizes at 11,000 kilotons; citrus planting area results at 173,300 hectares with the total output of 2,000 kilotons; vegetables seeding area reaches 667,000 hectares with the total amounts of 15,000 kilotons. Also, we have to work hard for the annual output of live pigs reaches to 23,000 chin-head, total output value of animal husbandry exceed 50 billion yuan, that accounting for 42% of the total output value of agriculture; average annual per capita net income growth of 15% and try our best to break through 6,000 yuan.
